Climate Commitment

Byzantine Design believes in the principle, "buy once, buy well." Tiles are a permanent fixture that should be installed with durability and a long-term view in mind. We hope to do our part to make our industry more sustainable, contributing to a better future for all of us.

The tile industry greatly impacts the environment. From manufacturing to shipping to freight, the process leaves a mark on the ecosystem. In 2020, Byzantine Design is embarking on a climate commitment to reduce our emissions, with the ultimate goal being to become carbon-neutral.

There are 3 main pillars of the commitment thus far:

Freight

We constantly ship pallets between Sydney and Melbourne, and we ship each order separately. Currently, we are trialling some new systems and warehousing to bring bulk pallets to Melbourne which will then be shipped separately throughout Melbourne.

As part of our commitment Byzantine Design will be planting trees in conjunction with the Carbon Neutral Charitable Fund for each pallet delivered. Our freight Partner Customised Group will match us tree for tree, doubling our impact! There will be a counter on our new website (April 2020) counting how many trees we have planted thus far. The CNCF plant native trees in unused, depleted Australian farmland in an effort to restore the natural environment. Trees will be planted monthly and customers will receive an email specifying the numbers of trees we have planted on their behalf.

Carbon Offsets

Working with CNCF we will offset our carbon emissions created by the store. They have a great calculator you can use here

Sampling and couriers

We are changing all of our packaging for samples over to compostable packaging. If we use bubblewrap it has been recycled from something else that has been sent to us. We have purchased the following products -

@NoIssue
NoIssue sells sustainable, compostable packaging. Byzantine design aims to reduce the waste produced when sending out tile samples by sending them in compostable bags rather than plastic.

GreenWrap Ranpak
Bubble wrap is another form of plastic that wreaks havoc on the environment. Byzantine Design is transitioning to GreenWrap tissue paper, which can be recycled or composted after use.
